Physician Spotlight on Dr. Samuel Gerber

How did you get interested in orthopedics?

My interest in orthopedics began when I worked as an orderly and orthopedic technician during my summers while I was in college at Yale. During my orthopedic surgical rotation at the Massachusetts General Hospital during medical school at Harvard, I recognized my passion to improve patients’ lives by restoring function and getting back to work and sports. Orthopedics was the right fit for me.

What is your practice philosophy?

My philosophy is to tailor the treatment of my patients to their individual needs and treat them with respect and compassion. I work closely with my patients to get them back to doing what they love, whether it is sports or gardening, and restore their overall quality of life.

What should patients be excited about in orthopedics?

I am excited every day to come to work and there is a lot to be hopeful about in orthopedics. Knee and shoulder surgery continue to improve with ongoing improvements in instrumentation and new techniques to help patients return to a normal and productive life.

Why should patients see a sports medicine specialist for their injuries and concerns?

It is important to see an expert for injuries and concerns because as an orthopedic surgeon with a sports medicine specialization, I have a wealth of knowledge and experience helping athletes and active people get back to doing what they love. Being active is a key factor in the quality of life of my patients and I work to get them back to doing what they love as safely as possible.

What are your areas of clinical interest?

I am interested in all types of sports injuries and conditions. Some of the treatments I consider while treating these conditions include rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic surgery, ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstructions, and total knee replacement.

What are your personal interests?

When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending quality time with my wife of over 43 years, my three adult children, and my granddaughter. I enjoy staying active through weight training, yoga, and golf. I also play guitar and sing in a band. We have a 15-year-old rescue cockapoo who brings a lot of joy to our lives.
